Update for Paying Immigration Bonds at the ICE Milwaukee

As the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Liaison to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Milwaukee, Attorney Glorily A. López receives updates directly from ICE officials. The new procedure for paying immigration bonds at ICE Milwaukee is detailed in the instructions below.

To pay an immigration bond, the obligor (the individual paying the bond) should first call the ICE Milwaukee at (414) 287-6351, and leave a detailed voicemail stating his or her name, and the detained immigrant’s name, date of birth, and alien number (if available). The obligor will then receive a call back within 24 hours from an ICE agent to make arrangements for the payment of the immigration bond and the release of the detained alien. Note that only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents with valid ID are allowed to post bond for a detained immigrant.

The only acceptable forms of payment for immigration bonds are money orders or guaranteed bank checks, made payable to “Department of Homeland Security” or “Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”  Bonds in the amount of $10,000 or more must be paid via a single money order or bank check; for bonds under $10,000, ICE indicates they strongly prefer payment be made with a single money order or bank check.

Bond payments are only accepted Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  ICE recommends the obligor arrives early, between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on the day he or she plans on posting bond for a detained immigrant. However, as previously indicated, arrangements for the payment of the immigration bond and the release of the detained alien must be made telephonically with an ICE agent prior to posting bond.
