Gretchen J. Burgess

Attorney Gretchen Burgess is dedicated to helping individuals and families navigate the complexities of estate planning, including the preparation of revocable and irrevocable trusts, wills, powers of attorney for healthcare and finance, special and supplemental needs trusts, and marital property agreements. She represents clients in probate matters and disputes among heirs, including breach of fiduciary duties, while providing thoughtful guidance throughout the legal process.

Gretchen also handles the establishment and termination of adult guardianships, as well as the preparation of Wispact trusts. She assists clients in all aspects of the estate administration procedures, including formal and informal estate administration, special administration, and trust administration.

In addition, Gretchen has significant experience in farm succession planning. She has presented on farm succession planning to farm families through the University of Wisconsin’s Agricultural Extension program. Her knowledge of the topic complements the firm’s broad capabilities in helping farmers in a wide range of legal matters such as business operations, property sales/purchases, real estate disputes, and divorces.

As a Shareholder and Practice Group Leader of the firm's Estate Planning & Probate Practice Group, Gretchen also realizes the importance of commitment to the community. She is an active citizen through service on boards of several organizations that affect children and families. She has volunteered her time with Big Brothers Big Sisters, CASA, Crimestoppers, Rotary Botanical Garden, Geneva Lakes YMCA, and the Elkhorn Area School District. Gretchen is also active in legal organizations, she regularly presents on estate planning to lawyers and the community, and volunteers her time for higher education.

Gretchen is available to meet with clients in the firm’s Madison and Janesville offices, as well as remotely.

Gretchen lives in Whitewater with her husband, son, and daughter, and loves to snowmobile and scuba dive. She has lived in Tokyo, Japan, and she is a Gold certified figure skating judge and coach.
